A newly published study suggests that the function of Adiponectin, an anti-inflammatory hormone, secreted by the fat tissue to increase the sensitivity of human cells to insulin, maintain and regulate energy homeostasis and proper lipid (fat) metabolism could also be improved through a Mediterranean Diet. Nutri-Med Logic Corp states that, as it relates to Adiponectin and its decline, stress is a more predominant cause of its decline, thus diets that tilt more toward nutrients capable of moderating both stress and inflammation would provide a more comprehensive result.

The role of adiponectin in regulating the metabolism of glucose and fat is fundamental. Additionally, elevated blood level of adiponectin has been associated with a reduced risk of heart attack. Conversely, low levels of adiponectin has been associated with higher risk of Obesity.

Plethora of studies have suggested high adiponectin levels deter metabolic and cardiovascular disease progression, through its anti-inflammatory properties.

This new study suggests a Mediterranean diet, as one of the management strategies to increase the adiponectin levels.

One of the most predominant factors in suppression of adiponectin is stress.

Stress, be it physiological or physiological, produces cortisol, which causes the inhibition of adiponectin needed to increase insulin sensitivity, increase fatty acids oxidation, reduce triglycerides and improve glucose metabolism. (2)

Glucocorticoid (the parent to cortisol) inhibition of adiponectin, in human, has been shown by both exogenous administrations to healthy subjects and endogenous cortisol hyper-production. (chronic inflammation and chronic stress).

Levels of adiponectin in obese patients and their obese controls have indicated a relationship between adiponectin and cortisol. (3)

In animal studies, the adiponectin was increased 2.7 fold through a diet rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids. (4)

In addition, studies done by The U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, U.S. National Institutes of Health, have shown that low Omega-3 DHA fatty Acids levels were correlated with the elevated levels of cortisol. Studies have shown that DHA intake could moderate cortisol levels in the humans. (5)

Accordingly, the only portion of the Mediterranean diet that would be effective, in moderating stress, is the fish portion, which provides Omega-3 to the human body.

While it is true that seeds and legumes have unsaturated fatty acids but that includes mono-unsaturated and the polyunsaturated fatty acids of Linoleic Acid (the precursor to Omega-6 fatty acids). Omega-6 is a competitor to Omega-3 and inhibits the full conversion of Alpha-Linolenic (DHA precursor) to Omega-3 DHA Fatty Acids.

In Europe, there is a dietary intake guideline for Omega-3 as a dietary supplement but none has been established in US. However, the US scientific body has recommended a daily intake range of 250mg to 500mg of Omega-3, in order to promote good health.

The Omega-3 DHA Fatty Acids intake from fish portion of the Mediterranean diet thoroughly depends on the amount, frequency and the type of the fish, whereas the intake of Omega-3 DHA fatty Acids, from its dietary supplementation, is a label fact.

The NAPW South Atlanta Chapter held their 2012 kick-off networking meeting at Monarch Tower in Buckhead on Friday, January 20th, 2012. Nancy Delgadillo, President of the NAPWs South Atlanta Chapter hosted the meeting by welcoming everyone with lunch, compliments of the NAPW, briefly speaking about the North and South Atlanta chapters collaborating as a team, and discussed the plan for 2012.

Over thirty chapter members and guests were in attendance including women in various leadership positions and professions ranging from healthcare to hospitality to communications. Many of the attendees were proud entrepreneurs and/or professionals and executives at large companies such as UPS, The Coca Cola Company, Turner Broadcasting, just to name a few.

We are excited to have an exceptionally diverse group of women, said Nancy, allowing for networking opportunities outside of our industries to build new relationships, share ideas and connections with other successful women across Atlanta, and most of all to empower each other.

The NAPW South Atlanta Chapter meets on a monthly basis, as well as quarterly in conjunction with the North Atlanta Chapter. The group has created Twitter, Facebook and Blog pages in an effort to increase communication and the sharing of knowledge and ideas to propel each other to become remarkable businesswomen and leaders in all areas of their lives.

Mary Chapin Carpenter, singer/songwriter

Mary Chapin Carpenter has always chosen her own path. From her first gigs as a rising star on Washington D.C.s folk scene in the early 1980s, she has made a reputation as both a singer and songwriter with a mind of her own. Over the course of an 11-album recording career, Carpenter has won five Grammy Awards and sold over 13 million records. She has scored 12 Top 10 singles, including He Thinks Hell Keep Her, which was nominated for a Record of the Year Grammy.
